We really loved exploring our book – Pugs of the Frozen North by Phili Reeve and Sarah McIntyre – today for World Book Day!

We looked at the mathematics within this exciting book, where 66 pugs pull a sledge in a race to the top of the world. We calculated how many legs that would be – a whopping 264! After that we posed our questions – take a look!

  • Uncategorised Comments Off on Romans Trip to Chester

Year 4 had a fantasic day learning all about the Romans. We went on a Roman march through the Roman Gardens where we learnt different battle strategies and how to fight like a Roman soldier.

We then moved on to the Roman amphitheatre, Miss Shone ALMOST lost her head after a near fight to the death as we learnt about slaves and gladiators.

Did you know that gladiators in England would have fought wolves and bears? Gladiators in Rome were more likely to have fought lions and tigers!

After a very quick lunch, we were guided through the DEWA experience to learn lots more about Ancient Rome and its influence in Chester. We learnt about what it would have been like as a Roman doctor before moving on to how Romans took baths and even went to the toilet!

To finish the day off we were taken to an archaeological dig to look for evidence of the Romans before having some fun dressing up and playing!

  • Uncategorised Comments Off on Blackbrook Evacuation and VE Day Celebrations

Thank you so much for all the effort everyone has put in to make our evacuation a success! It was with great sadness that we saw our Year 4 children evacuated to the Lake District following the devastating news that we were now at war with Germany.

Children spent their morning travelling on a train, opening up packages from loved ones before meeting our dreaded Billeting Officer – Mrs Murphy! She soon had them straightened up (and silent because of course children should be seen and not heard!) ready to meet their host families.

They learnt first hand about the hardships experienced by people during the war with regard to rationing – forget about jam tarts and chocolate bars!

There was no time to complain however, we knew our country needed us – time for stiff upper lips, calming down and carrying on.

We wrote letters home to our family and loved ones, whom we had been missing dreadfully after being separated from them for so so long…

However, it wasn’t too much longer when we were greeted with the amazing news that Germany (not long after dinner time) had finally surrendered and we could get on with our VE Day celebrations – full of jam butties and tarts – before being reunited with our families at the end of the war (or school day as it were).

The Year 4 team would like to say a massive thank you to all parents and guardians for your effort, help and continued support – the children looked absolutely brilliant!

  • Uncategorised Comments Off on Maths through story…

This week we have been looking at the following book –

We looked at the maths we could get from this story about a child being evacuated to the countryside.

We were surprised to find lots of mathematics and looked at the following: train journeys, distances and times; gas mask boxes and different nets to make them; timeline of rationing; calculating rations for various sized families and recipes for rationed goods.

We are gearing up reading for Year 4 Evacuee Day tomorrow, just another reminder of what you will need for tomorrow – Evacuee Day Notice.

We have also sent the children home with a blank identity tag tonight. We would be grateful if you could fill them in and attach it to their outfit tomorrow morning before coming to school for the usual time.
