At St. Mary’s we want all pupils to develop their creativity and find out what they not only show promise in, but what they enjoy through their learning journey in the art.

We are an Artsmark school, and we are continually building on our arts provision and striving to encourage children to develop their creativity.

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary Blackbrook, we are innovating the curriculum for Art and Design.

The Art and Design co-ordinator has  worked with an Art specialist on developing a bespoke Art and Design curriculum to ensure skill progression for each group throughout the school.

Art & Design Overview

Art & Design Progression

Art & Design

 at St Mary’s

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms..

Helping your child with art and design at home

  • Allow access to simple art resources at home from an early age eg. paper, pens, chalks, scissors and glue
  • Play together with dough and experiment moulding different colours, textures, shapes and forms
  • Provide the freedom for your child to create and experiment with out boundaries – let them explore their individuality and own artistic style
  • Expose your children to lots of different types of art, take a trip to a local gallery, eg the Walker Art Gallery and explore and discuss the pieces of art they like and don’t like
  • Research local and favourite artists and their styles
  • Explore opportunities to create digital art
  • Be proud of their art work, display it at home and tell them just how fabulous it is!
